You can grab enemies when they are close to you, and can use them as a shield to block damage from one side, but they'll jump out of your reach if you hold them too long, so hit grab again to throw them behind you.
You can block enemy attacks, but it doesn't completely absorb all the damage, however knockback isn't applied when blocking, so it can be used strategically to position yourself better.
